The Role
A Senior Product Designer is part of a cross-functional team building and supporting an enterprise-scale design system, similar to the Carbon design system used by IBM. By delivering matching tooling for designers and engineers we increase consistency and efficiency in product development across the company. On this team, designers and engineers work closely together, from discovery to release, building, documenting, and supporting the design system.
The role includes a variety of responsibilities such as working with a small team of designers and engineers creating system tooling and necessary documentation, supporting users of the system in different ways, planning and managing the scope of work for a project team, and defining ways to improve our process and service.
There are a number of opportunities for professional growth in this role including working in a highly collaborative team environment, exposure to all aspects of design system work, and a high degree of personal ownership over assigned projects. Additionally, everyone on the team has time each week to build their skills and focus on professional development.
What you’ll be doing
Create and refine a systematic and unified interaction language for all Northwestern Mutual digital products
Use a collaborative and iterative process to design, prototype, and validate design ideas
Write guidelines for using and implementing the design system
Support users of the system through multiple channels
Plan and manage the scope of work for a small project team
Design digital applications using the design system
Identify and initiate ways to improve the quality of the design system program
Engage with community to understand wants and needs and use the feedback to advocate for projects in the roadmap

A Senior Product Designer will have the following experience & skills:
You have a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent
Experience that may include a combination of the following
Working on or using a design system or reusable component libraries
Working on complex, highly transactional, data intensive digital products & services
Developing a visual style across a variety of executions
Demonstrate a well-rounded set of digital design skills with primary emphasis on system and interface design with secondary abilities in information architecture and research.
Evince an enthusiasm for design systems and supporting designers and non-designers alike in using one.
Comfortable exploring and executing work with minimal direction from leadership
Demonstrate ability to balance specific product needs into more broadly applicable components and patterns for multiple products.
You are an advocate for design process and methods, and have experience teaching non-designers how they can make use of them and gain value from their practice for themselves.
Responsive to direction and comfortable working with multiple people from different disciplines to achieve an outcome
You are strategic and outcome oriented and present your work based on a critical eye to the business.
You are not only proficient in relevant tools of the trade but explore tools & tooling to always be ready to switch to the next outstanding tool.
You use your communications and social skills to influence collaborators, as well as to clearly communicate requirements, requests, and responses.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience in a regulated industry like financial/banking, insurance, and/or healthcare
Experience working in accessibility, particularly assessing conformance of user interface designs to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
