Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a Product Designer to create innovative experiences around delivering our best-in-class journalism to readers in their inbox.

The Newsletters, Email and Push Notifications team amplifies the reach and impact of Times’ journalism through editorial and alert-style newsletters and push notifications. We connect readers with the voices and information they seek to live a curious and engaged life, fostering a presence in their day-to-day lives.

As a Product Designer on this team, you’ll work closely with newsroom editors, product managers, engineers, user researchers and data analysts to find opportunities to enhance our newsletter and email offerings, help readers discover newsletters that enrich their lives, and develop new pathways to help readers stay informed via email and push notifications.

The Newsletters, Email and Push team at The New York Times is responsible for:

  • A portfolio of subscriber-only newsletters, including award-winning commentary on race, climate, technology, and how to live a healthier life.

  • “Flagship” newsletters  like The Morning — by itself, a readership of 4+ million each day — which go out everyday.

  • A suite of personalized newsletters such as For You, and news cycle-specific digests, including the Coronavirus Tracker and Wildfire Tracker that help readers stay connected to the news.

  • A set of email alerts and push notification channels that notify readers when we publish what they’re interested in, like Breaking News, The Daily Podcast, The Great Read, The News Quiz, and others.

  • How people discover, sign-up for, and manage their email and push notifications across web, email, and our apps.

The New York Times is leading the way as a digital-first subscription business that puts high quality journalism at the center of its offering.  We’ve made it a priority to create first-in-class internal tools and platforms to support and shape the user experiences that enable our business capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Support high-level product strategy, ensuring we're asking the right questions and solving for the most important user needs.

  • Create artifacts for user testing and experimentation, and apply any insights to your designs.

  • Create documentation (e.g. user journeys, experience maps, wireframes, frameworks) to facilitate conversations, build consensus, and help make decisions.

  • Take product ideas and hone them into multiple solutions and concrete approaches, then collaboratively narrow ideas and establish requirements.

  • Create production-ready design deliverables and partner with Engineering to ensure high-quality, performant experiences and assure the visual quality of our output.

  • Adhere to and contribute to our design system.

  • Adhere to inclusive and accessible design principles in your process.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 years relevant experience.

  • A portfolio of work that showcases your thought process along with finished design work.

  • Proficiency in user research, prototyping and interaction design.

  • Understanding of how data and qualitative research inform product and design decisions.

  • Experience working with product and engineering partners.

  • The ability to communicate approach and design decisions to a variety of audiences; excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Cross-discipline fluency. You know how to break down big challenges into smaller decisions framed as trade-offs (e.g. time vs. scope).

  • Can demonstrate visual and typographic sensibilities.

  • Knowledge of the media space and/or designing newsletters.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $96,000.00 and $125,000.00.
