Climate change is a top concern for many Americans, and Solstice is poised to experience fast growth as demand for climate solutions surges from governments, businesses, and nonprofits.

Position Overview

Solstice is seeking a Product Designer to help build out and scale our Community Solar and clean energy product offerings. At Solstice, the Product Designer role is empowered to solve hard problems – customer problems, business problems, and clean energy equity problems – in ways that our customers love, yet create long term value for our business. We are looking for a Product Designer who will advance our customer research, design great experiences, and who truly cares about the people we are looking to serve. Not only will this person need to deeply understand and think through product strategy, but they will also need to be able to design good interactions and have good visual sense.

Responsibilities:

  • Define specs, produce prototypes, test functionality, and track and analyze impact to iterate quickly and increase value.
  • Translate stakeholder input, product specs, and personal creativity to create and communicate design concepts to the engineering team.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering, marketing, and product to identify opportunities for new or improved products, features, and experiences.
  • Lead customer discovery efforts and amplify insights across the team.
  • Increase our shared knowledge and use of data through quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Always be wondering how our products impact our users – particularly those in low and middle income communities and communities historically excluded from clean energy and green economy opportunities.
  • Own multiple projects simultaneously and utilize excellent time management and communication skills.

Requirements

  • 1+ years designing and creating great user experiences in software products using methods to track and analyze their impact.
  • Expertise in designing native and web apps with sketching skills.
  • Experience with customer discovery and research methodologies and of using this research to inform designed experiences.
  • Ability to lead user interviews, demos, no or low-code testing, focus group sessions, etc.
  • Expertise in design tools like Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD, Miro, etc.
  • A drive and enthusiasm for designing great products.
  • An intense interest in and enthusiasm for championing the customer.
  • A product growth mindset: Shows a willingness to question, innovate, and improve. Not just serve in a process to get from A to B.
  • Intellectually humble, curious, creative, imaginative, empathetic, and gritty.

Diverse perspectives: We are seeking someone who understands that consistent innovation is the result of each member of the product and design team contributing their passion and their ideas. As such, we explicitly seek people that bring diverse life experiences, diverse educational backgrounds, skills, cultural perspective, and work experiences. Please be prepared to share with us how your perspective will bring something unique and valuable to our team

Benefits

As Product Designer, you will gain:

  • Significant responsibility for discovering, prioritizing, and executing upon opportunities that will solve problems for our customers in a way that is good for our business and will advance our mission.
  • Deep subject matter expertise on the renewable energy space, in particular the community solar industry, as well as the foundations of and solutions toward environmental justice.
  • Experience working closely with a software engineering team to deliver results in an agile environment.
  • Hands on experience in a high growth Series A clean tech startup.

About Solstice

Climate change mitigation requires massive clean energy expansion, yet 77 percent of American households cannot install rooftop solar power due to rented housing, the structure of their rooftop, the upfront cost, or access to financing. Solstice connects households and community organizations to “community solar”—shared solar farms that are installed in a centralized location where local residents can enroll in a portion for free, without any home installations, and enjoy guaranteed savings on their monthly utility bill.

One of the only companies in the solar industry co-founded and led by women of color, Solstice has generated demand for nearly 139MW of clean energy across 43 community renewable projects in multiple states, with the total clean energy capacity from enrolled households, small businesses, and nonprofits representing the environmental equivalent of not burning 62 million pounds of coal. In addition, Solstice’s software manages the end-to-end customer experience for the life of the 20-year renewable energy project on behalf of developers and financiers, from customer enrollment to billing/crediting to ongoing customer engagement.

Solstice was founded to advance equity and inclusion in America. We are committed to living those values, not just in the work we do to promote environmental and energy justice, but in how we grow as an organization. We seek to always expand leadership opportunities for marginalized communities in the global transition to clean energy.

Solstice is an equal opportunity employer. We hire, train, compensate, and promote without regard to race, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, national origin, genetics, veteran status, or any of the other characteristics that give each of us a unique perspective and capacities.

We’re a team of mission-driven, passionate, and dedicated individuals. We’ve fostered an inclusive and fun culture through monthly outings, solar farm field trips, and all-team strategy retreats throughout the year. To ensure the health and safety of our teammates, all employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to attend in-person events. Apply today and get to know us!
